right now i’m working on a 40 unit condo complex. (above was my previous project a beach house) i have the 5 different building types in 5 different sketchup files. does anyone know how if I can open a new file and insert them (like an AutoCAD XREF) so that I can have the neighborhood but use the original 5 files ot update the buildings as the design progresses?

You should be able to copy/paste between two files.

I’m sure you do fine work, but seeing an Allroad in a house design would have me running for the hills.

yea but i’d like it to be so that if I change the windows in the individual model it just updates the neighborhood model.

Heh working in SketchUp model myself right now. Sadly I don’t know if it’s possible to use reference files in a SketchUp file. There may be a plug-in which allows this, but I don’t know of any built in feature that lets you do that.

As others have said a copy/paste is the quickest option, but not ideal.
Depending on your situation and needs I’d go with a massing block representing the other strutures; when all are finished, copy and paste them into the final model.

yea the blocks might be a good way to go. I just didn;t want ot have to copy and paste 5 models in. I just had a phone call with the guy and all 5 buildings are changing, so if I already had the neighborhood set up, I’d have to go re-copy/paste all of them in.

what are you doing in sketchup?

Working on a design model/future rendering for a church client, he is replacing his mid-century church with a much larger and much more traditional building.

I’ll eventually have to model the entire campus as well as the full interior, but for now it’s just the exterior and the main sanctuary.

Vectorworks can do that but idk about sketchup.
